Reading and Writing Assignment #9: Career Research

This week we are combining Reading and Writing into one assignment you can work on.  In addition if you would like, you can continue to work on Lexia of find some stories on Get Epic to read!


What do you want to be when you grow up?  Even though you are a way off, it is still fun to think about jobs you are interested in.  In this project you are going to research, explain and advertise a specific job.  Have fun and pick something you are interested in.







MATH

This week both grades are going to do some patterning review.  Here are some videos you can watch to help you if you need a refreshment!




Example: Start at 1. Add 2 each time.

1. Complete the pattern by writing out the first 5 terms.

a) Start at 23.  Add 19 each time


b) Start at 766.  Subtract 66 each time.

g) start at 10.  Alternately add 5. Then subtract 2.

Our last science unit in grade 4 is learning all about Pulleys and Gears.  Watch this video for an introduction as to what pulleys are.

3.     A pulley has two main parts.  A string (or rope) and a ________.
4.     Give an example of any pulley used in real life and draw this example; showing how the pulley works.

Art Assignment #9: Creativity

This week we are getting creative.  Art is about expressing yourself in a unique way.  I have added a video that has a number of different art activities.  Because not everyone has the same supplies at home, and I don’t want anyone going shopping for the sake of e-learning I didn’t want to assign a specific one.  Pick one (or as many as you like if) and complete it and send me a picture.  If what you see on the video inspires you to do something else that is OK too!

Reading and Writing Assignment #8:  Mind Maps
This week we are combining Reading and Writing into one assignment you can work on.  In addition, if you would like, you can continue to work on Lexia or find some stories on Get Epic to read!  It’s always good to try to read for at least 20 minutes per day.

What is a Mind Map?
A mind map is a fast and fun way to organize your thoughts and ideas.  Mind maps are graphic organizers that use words, phrases, and images to organize ideas.  The main idea is placed in the centre of the mind map, and then related ideas are added to it.  Mind maps are used to organize information to gain a better understanding.

How to Mind Map:
1.      Begin with your main idea.  This goes in the middle of your page.  (try using a blank page)
2.    Add branches to this main idea that include additional information. 
3.    Explore your topic by adding more branches with related words and/or phrases.
4.    Add images and colours.

In grade 4 and 5, we are going to continue our work on data management.  This week we are going to be working on both our graphing and analyzing data skills.  You can also go on I Know It! Math to further work on your mathematical learning.

GRADE 4 SCIENCE:




Project time!  This week, you are going to research a rock or mineral of your choice and you can choose any way to present your learning to me. 

Rock/Mineral Success Criteria (what your rock/mineral project should show):
       Illustration or picture of your rock/mineral
       Type of rock your rock/mineral is (igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary)
       Hardness of rock/mineral (on Mohs scale)
       How the rock/mineral is made
       Where is your rock/mineral is found
       Interesting facts about your rock/mineral

Some examples of rocks to choose for your project:  granite, jade, slate, shale, limestone, and birthstones such as; ruby, sapphire, diamond, emerald, etc.

Some examples of how to show your learning:  poster, brochure, infographic, mind map, powerpoint, commercial, etc.

GRADE 5 SCIENCE: Earthquake Structure


This week we are going to make structures that have to withstand an earthquake.  Now I know that not everyone has the materials in the video so it is totally ok to improvise.  Please start by watching the video.


Here is the criteria for your structure.
- Use toothpicks and marshmallows to create you tower (alternative:  straws, spaghetti, popsicle sticks, sticks, Q-tips, plasticine, playdough, or anything else you have at home)
- Create a tower that is 20 – 30 cm high
- place the tower in a tray of Jello (alternative: sand, dirt, or anything else you have at home)
- Shake the tray for 30 seconds and see if your tower falls over.  If it does make modifications to your structure and try again

Send me pictures or videos of your structure so I can take a look!

Answer the questions below:
  1. How tall was your structure?
  2. Was it able to stand for the 30 seconds? If it did explain why.  If it didn’t explain why.
  3. If you had a chance to do this project again, what would you have done differently?
