Reading and Writing Assignment #7: Infographics

This week we are combining Reading and Writing into one assignment you can work on. In addition if you would like, you can continue to work on Lexia of find some stories on Get Epic to read!

Take a look at the infographic below. Answer the questions in full sentences.

1. What information conveyed in the infographic is new to you?
2. What is interesting to you?
3. What seems to be especially significant? Why?
4. Overall, how does the information in this infographic enhance your understanding of the coronavirus outbreak? Explain.

Next I would like you to create you own Infographic on the topic of your choice. Infographics are graphic visual representations of information, data, or knowledge intended to present information quickly and clearly.

It can be on something that is relevant in the news or on something you are an expert on. You can create your info graphic on the computer, draw/write it out, or come up with you own idea.

Here are the criteria for your infographic;

- It must focus on one topic (social distancing, the history of the DH in baseball, ET the movie)

- It must have 4-6 headings

- It must contain some facts you have researched or know about your topic

- It must contain pictures and or graphics

- It must fit on 1-2 pages and be easy for your reader to follow

Art Assignment #7: Graffiti Art

I have always enjoyed graffiti and doodling words and then making them look cool. This week I would like you to follow the video and create your own word design.

FOSSILS

This week we are going to learn about Procedural Writing. During this pandemic, you have probably seen more procedural text than you have before.

What is a Procedural Text?

A procedural text is a piece of writing that gives instructions in an organized way. It is a non-fiction piece of writing. The features of a procedural text help to sequence the needed steps so that you can recreate the task the way it should be done.

· Science Experiments

· Building Instructions

Parts of a Procedural Text

· Subtitles – List of Ingredients/Materials; Steps or Procedures

Math Assignment: Measurement~Elapsed Time

In grade 4, one of the curriculum standards measurement regarding time is to estimate and determine elapsed time, with and without using a time line, given the durations of events expressed in five-minute intervals, hours, days, weeks, months, or years

Question: If you wake up at 7:30 a.m., and it takes you 10 minutes to eat your breakfast, 5 minutes to brush your teeth, 25 minutes to wash and get dressed, 5 minutes to get your backpack ready, and 20 minutes to get to school, will you be at school by 9:00 a.m.?

In grade 5, the following are the curriculum standards for measurement regarding time and temperature:

~ estimate and determine elapsed time, with and without using a time line, given the durations of events expressed in minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, or years

~ measure and record temperatures to determine and represent temperature changes over time (Sample problem: Investigate the relationship between weather, climate, and temperature changes over time in different locations)

Question: You are travelling from Toronto to Montreal by train. If the train departs Toronto at 11:30 a.m. and arrives in Montreal at 4:56 p.m., how long will you be on the train?

Mohs Hardness Scale

In 1822, the Austrian Mineralogist Friedrich Mohs devised a scale based on one mineral’s ability to scratch another. He placed 10 minerals in order from softest to hardest, giving a relative hardness value of 1 to the softest mineral and 10 to the hardest. Each mineral in the scale scratches the one below it and not the one above it. This became known as the Mohs’ scale of hardness, and it is still one of the best practical methods of estimating a mineral’s hardness. Mohs designed ten minerals for his scale from hardest (10) to softest (1).

Grade 4 Science Assignment:

You are going to conduct your own experiment on some rocks to determine their hardness. Use your fingernail and/or a penny. Do not use glass or a steel nail. Describe your rocks and give them a number based on Mohs Hardness Scale.

Grade 5 Science Assignment: Structure Challenge #3

Please watch the video that has been created to demonstrate what your challenge is for the week;

Criteria:- The structure can be made with anything from your home- The structure cannot be more than 30 cm tall
- It has to hold I sheet of paper towel (can be folded)
- Must be able to squirt the building from every angle with the paper towel remains dry
- Has to sit in a tray that is full with 1L of water
- Has to stand while having air blown on it from a blow-dryer (For at least 10 seconds)

1. How tall was your structure?
2. Was it able to successfully pass each test? Explain.
3. If you had a chance to do this project again, what would you have done differently?
