Reading
and Writing Assignment #8: Mind Maps
This week we
are combining Reading and Writing into one assignment you can work on. In addition, if you would like, you can
continue to work on Lexia or find some stories on Get Epic to read! It’s always good to try to read for at least
20 minutes per day.
What is a Mind Map?
A mind map
is a fast and fun way to organize your thoughts and ideas. Mind maps are graphic organizers that use
words, phrases, and images to organize ideas.
The main idea is placed in the centre of the mind map, and then related
ideas are added to it. Mind maps are
used to organize information to gain a better understanding.
How to Mind Map:
1. Begin with your main idea. This goes in the middle of your page. (try
using a blank page)
2.
Add
branches to this main idea that include additional information.
3.
Explore
your topic by adding more branches with related words and/or phrases.
4. Add images and colours.

GRADE 5 SCIENCE: Earthquake Structure
This week we are going to make structures that have to withstand an earthquake. Now I know that not everyone has the materials in the video so it is totally ok to improvise. Please start by watching the video.
Here is the criteria for your structure.
- Use toothpicks and marshmallows to create you
tower (alternative: straws, spaghetti,
popsicle sticks, sticks, Q-tips, plasticine, playdough, or anything else you
have at home)
- Create a tower that is 20 – 30 cm high
- place the tower in a tray of Jello (alternative:
sand, dirt, or anything else you have at home)
- Shake the tray for 30 seconds and see if your tower
falls over. If it does make
modifications to your structure and try again
Send me pictures or videos of your structure so I
can take a look!
Answer
the questions below:
- How tall was your structure?
- Was it able to stand for the 30 seconds? If it did explain why. If it didn’t explain why.
- If you had a chance to do this project again, what would you have done differently?

LANGUAGE~READING
Continue to read books and/or explore reading on Lexia® Core5® Reading. You can also choose to read on Epic and/or a real book. The choice is yours.
LANGUAGE~WRITING
This week we are going to learn about Procedural Writing. During this pandemic, you have probably seen more procedural text than you have before.
What is a Procedural Text?
A procedural text is a piece of writing that gives instructions in an organized way. It is a non-fiction piece of writing. The features of a procedural text help to sequence the needed steps so that you can recreate the task the way it should be done.
Kinds of Procedural Texts
· Recipes
· Craft Instructions
· Science Experiments
· Game Instructions
· Building Instructions
Parts of a Procedural Text
· Title
· Subtitles – List of Ingredients/Materials; Steps or Procedures
· Numbered Steps
· Pictures or diagrams
Here is an example of procedural writing. The topic is Tic-Tac-Toe.
Here is a sample of how to organize your procedural writing.
Here is how the procedural writing was then organized.
Procedural Writing Assignment:
You are going to be completing your own procedural writing on
a topic of your choice. Think of something that interests you. Be creative!
Here are some ideas if you can’t think of anything:
create
something
follow a
recipe
teach a
lesson
draw
something
You can
organize your writing with this:
Use this as a checklist for your Procedural Writing:
I look
forward to reading your procedural writing!

Assignment: Measurement~Elapsed Time
In grade 4, one of the
curriculum standards measurement regarding time is to estimate and determine
elapsed time, with and without using a time line, given the durations of events
expressed in five-minute intervals, hours, days, weeks, months, or years
Question: If
you wake up at 7:30 a.m., and it takes you 10 minutes to eat your breakfast, 5
minutes to brush your teeth, 25 minutes to wash and get dressed, 5 minutes to
get your backpack ready, and 20 minutes to get to school, will you be at school
by 9:00 a.m.?
In grade 5, the following are
the curriculum standards for measurement regarding time and temperature:
~ estimate and determine
elapsed time, with and without using a time line, given the durations of events
expressed in minutes, hours, days, weeks, months, or years
~ measure and record
temperatures to determine and represent temperature changes over time (Sample
problem: Investigate the relationship
between weather, climate, and temperature changes over time in different
locations)
Question:
You are travelling from Toronto to Montreal by train. If the train departs Toronto at 11:30 a.m.
and arrives in Montreal at 4:56 p.m., how long will you be on the train?
I Know It!
You can explore elapsed time under this website this week as
well if you are looking to complete extra work.
GRADE 4
GRADE 5
GRADE 4:
SCIENCE
Mohs Hardness Scale
In 1822, the
Austrian Mineralogist Friedrich Mohs devised a scale based on one mineral’s
ability to scratch another. He placed 10
minerals in order from softest to hardest, giving a relative hardness value of
1 to the softest mineral and 10 to the hardest.
Each mineral in the scale scratches the one below it and not the one
above it. This became known as the Mohs’
scale of hardness, and it is still one of the best practical methods of
estimating a mineral’s hardness. Mohs
designed ten minerals for his scale from hardest (10) to softest (1).
Grade 4 Science Assignment:
You are
going to conduct your own experiment on some rocks to determine their
hardness. Use your fingernail and/or a
penny. Do not use glass or a steel nail.
Describe your rocks and give them a number based on Mohs Hardness Scale.
