Assignment #2: Creating a Newspaper Article
This week we are
going to start a unit on expository writing.
You are going to be a journalist who is responsible for coming up with a
story that next week we are going to turn into a newspaper article. Every good newspaper article needs a good
story. I am going to give you an example
of one I have done and then you are going to do one.
First you need to
watch the video about J Mac:
Every good
journalist takes good notes so he or she is able to write their story when they
get back to their office. A good story
is based on FACTS (you cannot make information up). So you have to take the information you are
given, or do a bit more research online to find more if you need it. The best wat to organize your information is
with a 5 W’s chart.
Example:
Who: Jason
McElwain (J Mac), Coach Johnson
What: This is a
story of never giving up
- J Mac is
autistic
- Manager of his
high school basketball team, never missed a game but never got to play
- Last game of
season was allowed to dress
- Coach put him in
at the end of the game and he scored 20 points
- Students at the
game went crazy
Where: Greece
Athena High School in Rochester NY
When: February 15,
2007
Why (is this a
story): It shows that when you are given a chance great things can happen
Once you have
gathered up information you need to put it into an interesting story that
people will want to read. Here is my
example.
At the age of 2, he was diagnosed with Autism. J Mac was determined to “be a normal
kid”. He loved basketball, but did not
make the Junior Varsity team at his high school Greece Athena. That did not stop him. J Mac became manager for the Varsity team and
in three years only missed one game. His
job was to fill the water bottles, and take care of the boys, but most
importantly he provided the enthusiasm that the team needed to succeed. Who is this remarkable young man? His name is Jason McElwain. Jason would have loved to be on the court,
but he was short and not as skilled as some of the other players. Coach Johnson valued his role as Manager.
But on February 15th, 2007 Jason experienced a life-altering
moment. Coach Johnson told Jason he
would try to get him into the game and with the team up by 20 points, he was
able to do just that. Only 4 minutes and
19 seconds remaining in the game and Coach Johnson motioned for Jason. “He almost ran right onto the court, he was
so excited”, said the Coach. Jason was pumped
to play. He received the ball and his
first shot missed the net. But at 3:46
remaining he received his second chance.
His shot was perfect. The crowd
exploded in applause. It was a moment
that touched the hearts of every person in that gym. Such a beautiful story, but it did not end
there. Jason was on fire. Almost every shot he took hit the mark. He scored 20 points by the end of that game,
the high scorer for the game. “The net
was like a big huge bucket and I was like a pistol”, said Jason. Everyone wants
a shot in life and Jason took his. “He
was unstoppable in that moment in time”.
Your task this
week is to watch the second video, create a 5W’s chart and write a story. Next week we are going to turn them into
newspaper articles. Remember to always
keep in mind, why is this a story? Email
me if you need any help!

Assignment # 2: An Epic Biography
Our
class code is: zng9847
Students should see their names in their class. It is their first name.
I have always loved to read biographies. A biography is
a true story about someone's life. Biographies tell about famous people, or ordinary people who
have done exciting things. They usually center on one person's life and how
they have contributed to the world. This
week I would like you to search for a biography on Epic and complete the
assignment below. You can do it on the
computer or write it out on paper. I
will email a copy of the organizer below but you don’t have to use it. Just make sure you include all of the information!

Assignment #2: I Know It!
You will have multiplication and division assignments under
your profile. This week, we are focusing
on factor pairs and cumulative property of multiplication. You are more than welcome to explore other
concepts once you are done your assignments.
*This is an American website so some math concepts will be different
then what is expected for Ontario curriculum.

4: SCIENCE
This week we will
learn about one type of rock called igneous rock. Igneous rock is one of the three different
types of rocks found in our world. See
below to see how igneous rock is first formed.
You will then see some of the different types of igneous rock and how
they are each made.
Rocks and
Minerals Reading Assignment #2:
On Epic, you have been assigned a book titled “How do
Volcanoes Make Rock?”. This book details
how igneous rock is formed. It will
appear under your “assignments” when you log in. Read this book and then take the quiz at the
end of the book. I’ll be looking to see
how you did on the quiz.
In this book entitled, “How do Volcanoes Make Rock?” you
will see rock from the Giants Causeway in Northern Ireland. I was fortunate to be able to visit this
place in the summer of 2018, and I have to tell you that it was one of the most
unique and beautiful places I have ever seen.
Here is a video and some of the pictures of the Igneous rock that I was
able to see there. I have included some
with me in them so you can see the magnitude of the rocks.
What shape do these rocks appear to be?
Notice the colour of the rock?
Have you seen any igneous rocks in your community?

Structures
Assignment #2: Building a Bridge
Last week you were
asked to do some research on bridge terms.
This week you are going to implement what you learned to build a bridge
and test your structure!
First, you may
want to watch this video on bridges, I have always found this video on the
bridges in San Francisco very interesting.
Challenge: You must build a bridge that spans at
least 30cm and can hold 10 pounds.
Specifications:
- Your bridge must
span a gap of at least 30cm but can be longer if you wish
- It must hold at
least 10 pounds (but you can go for more if you want a challenge)
- It must be wide
enough for a toy car to drive across
- You can use
WHATEVER materials you have at home (please do not go out and buy anything)
-
cardboard, glue, Lego, popsicle sticks, spaghetti, wood, nails, screw (with
parent permission) anything you can think of
- The bridge must
be appealing to look at (consider design, colour, pattern)
When you are
done building take a picture of the bridge and send it to me so I can see it.
Then test it but putting weight on a bit of a time to see if your bridge
can hold 10 pounds. If it does and you
want, keep going to see how much weight it can hold before it breaks! You may not have traditional weights at home
so you may need to use a scale and other materials to find something that
weighs 10 pounds.
When you are done
testing this bridge, answer the questions below and email me your work.
Name of Your
Bridge:
1. What materials
did you use and why?
2. What makes you
bride appealing to look at?
3. Why is it
important to have an attractive bridge?
4. Why is it important
for engineers to test bridges?
5. If you did this
challenge again, what would you have done differently?
