Week of April 20-24

MATH
Math Assignment #3:  I Know It!
You will have fraction assignments under your I Know It! profile.  This week, grade 4s are focusing on equivalent fractions, fractions of a set, and fractions of a shape.  Grade 5s will be comparing and ordering fractions, simplifying fractions, working with equivalent fractions, and determining fractions of shapes and sets.  You are more than welcome to explore other concepts once you are done your assignments.  *This is an American website so some math concepts will be different then what is expected for Ontario curriculum.

LANGUAGE~WRITING
Assignment #3: Creating a Newspaper Article
This week you are going to edit the article you wrote last week about the softball player (you may want to add more detail, check for spelling, etc.) and then publish it to add all of the criteria of a real newspaper article.  I have included an anchor chart entitled “Newspaper Article Criteria”to show you everything you should include (newspaper name, date, photograph, caption, headline, byline, columns, etc.).

You can try to create it on your computer.  If not, you can also use paper and a pencil to create your good copy.  Email me a copy of what you come up with and I will provide you with some feedback.

Mr. Shearim has also created a video of himself using Microsoft Word to create the article for some assistance.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0cx3JrM4Is

LANGUAGE~READING

We have been very fortunate that the Grand Erie District School Board has got all of our students log ins for Lexia® Core5® Reading.  This will take the place of our reading on Epic.  Students can continue to read on Epic for their own reading enjoyment!

I've included a link on this website...to the right

Lexia® Core5® Reading is an engaging and interactive program provides all students a structured approach to six areas of reading, from phonological awareness to comprehension. The program creates personalized learnings paths for each student through an adaptive placement and targets gaps that emerge.

*When students log on for the first time, students will need to do their own auto-placement.  In the attached letter it clearly states that parents should not help their child with this.  This program is so interactive that if a parent were to help with this, the child will be auto-placed higher than their appropriate independent reading level.

We will be sending you student usernames in a separate email.  All passwords are:  ban1

GRADE 4: SCIENCE
This week we will learn about another type of rock called sedimentary rock.  Sedimentary rock is the second of three types of rocks we will be learning about.  Sedimentary rock is formed when small pieces of rock break off from bigger rocks and are carried through water as sediment.  In time, with chemicals from water, they become sedimentary rocks.  These rocks often appear to have layers.  If you have seen a fossil, you have seen a sedimentary rock!  See below to see how sedimentary rock is formed.  You will then see some of the different types of sedimentary rock and how they are each made.
A)  Think about the sentence on the left, and visually match it to the sentence on the left.

B)  Fill in the blanks to find the origins of the sedimentary rocks with the following four words:

                  mud          sand          pebbles          shells

I absolutely love the looks of some sedimentary rocks.  Here are some that I have:

Rocks and Minerals Assignment #3 ~ Create your own sedimentary rock:

You can draw a picture of it and then describe the following:
What is your sedimentary rock’s name?
Describe the texture of your rock?
How is it formed?

GRADE 5: SCIENCE
Structures Assignment #3: Skyscraper Research

Watch the Bill Nye video on structures.

When you are done, take what you have learned (you can also use the internet if you want to do some additional research) to write a paragraph (at least 5 sentences) to answer the question.

What makes a solid skyscraper?  Hint: Think trees!

The more you know about skyscrapers, the better off you will be for next week’s building challenge.
